CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Alina stared at the door in horror. It seemed to exude evil, breathing a darkness from its pores out into the bright woodland around it. Lottie touched her arm, gently trying to move her back and Alina realized that she had moved closer, was now standing so close to the door that her nose was almost touching it.

“We will figure out who did this and why. But I sense this is a place to stay away from for now,” Lottie said.

The uncertainty in her voice was as frightening as the alien door but Alina stood firm. She felt her heart racing but through the fear was now coming pulses of anger. She gritted her teeth.

“Could this be Hekate’s doing?” she demanded.

“I doubt it. This is a power beyond the Titans,” Lottie replied.

“Tell me about the Void, Nap,” Alina said firmly.

“It is the darkness at the heart of the cosmos. It consumes everything within reach and would consume the entire universe if it could. Memes that have ventured too close to the Void have been lost forever.”

“So, what is doing in my head? This is my mind. Maybe this is why I can’t remember my past. My parents. My home. Some evil has come into my mind and locked away my memories. No!”

She was afraid but also angry. This evil had intruded into her head, was sitting there at the back of her mind. It made her feel sick to think of and outraged at the same time. She reached out and put her hand against the surface of the door. It was cold to the touch, the kind of cold that should have shattered her. The cold of the deepest space, the darkest fathoms of the ocean. A cold that had never been touched by the sun, by any sun. Lottie was no longer trying to pull Alina away but her hand still gripped tight.

“Help me, Lottie,” Alina commanded.

She was resolved now. The anger at what had been done overriding the fear. She was not defenseless. A warmth flooded through her from Lottie’s hand and Alina knew that in the real world her hair would be blazing brightly. The energy of the Lotus flooded her and met the utter cold of the door. It vanished. Like a burst bubble, the image of the door was gone without warning. In its place was a void. It held the outline of the door but within that shape was pure darkness.

It seemed to absorb the energy that pulsed through Alina and push back against it. Her hand felt cold, and that cold was moving to her wrist.

“Alina, it is too strong. We must get away from here,” Lottie said.

“No!” Alina shouted. “I won’t run. I want it out of my head.”

She concentrated on the warmth of the Lotus energy, trying to push it through her arm and into the dark. But the cold kept creeping further and further along her arm. As it did the forest began to dim. It was as though an immense shadow were falling over it.
